Monochrome Work
A portrait of my wife, taken around 1993. Many of my indoor portraits were taken in my conservatory, as it provides superb diffused lighting, negating the need to use a flash system.
Alison
This bridge supports Cromford Canal as it passes over the River Derwent near Whatstandwell.
Canal Bridge
A lesser known stone circle situated near Stanton Moor. It is often missed by visitors to the area due to it being located in a small wood, making it a tranquil spot to spend a few minutes.
Doll Tor
This remains my favorite picture of my Son. It was used by Kodak as 'picture of the day' on their website.
Ethan 1994
An image from a series of macro work taken of some of the plants growing around the garden. Monochrome images of small subjects are challenging, as macrophotography is often viewed as a colourful world.
Grasses
Just after my Son was born, I decided to take a series of images to show just how small and delicate a new born baby is. This pretty much sums it up.

The ruined water mills at Lumsdale are photogenic, irrespective of their color or mono capture. See my Autumn gallery for comparisons.

Poppy Heads
This large standing stone occupies a position in a field just south of Newhaven, Derbyshire. I had visited the site several times before taking this shot, as I was waiting for the sky to contain some interest.
Solitude
Situated near the visitors centre at Carsington Reservior, Stones Island was built over a Bronze Age burial mound. Views from the top provide excellent panoramas of the surrounding countryside and water.

Using fast 3200 film meant that I could track this windsurfer with sufficient speed and depth of field using a 200mm telephoto lens.
Windsurfer
This image is taken from a high resolution digital scan, the source material being a 16x12cm glass plate, circa 1890's. A positive was taken from the negative and cropped to remove the untidy edges. Some damage was evident in the form of scratches and fingerprints, which were removed via a layer added for this purpose. The emulsion had deteriorated badly, giving the image a very grainy appearance. Additional layers utilizing noise reduction techniques and texture preservation corrected this. Gamma correction was used to correct the mid tones, whilst highlights and shadows were adjusted using curves. Finally, a small amount of sharpening was carried out.
Matlock Bath
Stanton Moor; This eroded mound is all that remains of a Bronze Age burial mound. I photographed this area several times, using different film types, but felt that a mono image lent itself best to the subject. A red filter was used to enhance the sky.
